r/WallStreetBets pt. II 💎

Today we bring you a quick Part II of our ongoing research into the r/WallStreetBets (WSB) SubReddit; ie. the world’s most popular online forum for stock market degen’s. If you missed our first deep dive, check it out here for an intro.

This time we’ll wade a bit deeper into the specific ~keywords~ used in conversation, to see if we can parse out any major changes in the overall WSB vibes over the past few months. Like a little litmus test for the overall economic outlook these days. Let’s get it. 👿

Wading In:

To get acquainted, we went through everything said in WallStreetBets over the past few months, a total of ~100,000+ posts & comments. From here, we:

  • parsed out each word used in posts and comments

  • calculated the percentage of posts per month that used each word

  • honed in on the last 5 months to see what trends pop out

  • ??

  • profit 😎

You might notice a trend: particularly negative words on the rise (e.g. cost, risky, danger, warning… 🫣), and a lot of our positive words not being used as often (e.g. “good”).

This extends to some Reddit-native vernacular:

“HODL” - a battle cry borrowed from crypto, is the collective’s mantra when times get tough, and reminds them not to sell at the bottom of a cycle.

“to the moon” - Pretty self-explanatory, this is the prayer offered up to the stock market gods in hopes of sending some stock’s price into orbit (and beyond)

Overall, the mood seems markedly more grim.

Interestingly, we crunched these numbers before the fall-out from Silicon Valley Bank’s crash & burn even hit the platform. We won’t rehash any of that fiasco for you here, since many many write-ups have already come across your desk (the most up-to-date & comprehensive IMO is this one from Grit Capital). We’ll continue to monitor WSB for interesting setups identified by the folks there.

More to Come

Since it’s the weekend, we’ll cut here for now. Coming up this week, we’ll have a deeper dive into the stocks being talked about and how they trend with some of these keywords. It’s gonna be a crazy Monday folks, so good luck and happy hunting!
